How to play Towers

A Latin square wrapped in a viewing puzzle: the numbers around the edge tell you how much of the skyline you can see.

The rules

  1. Fill the grid. Fill the grid with numbers from 1 to the board size.
  2. No repeats. Each row and column must contain every number exactly once.
  3. Read skylines. Each outside clue counts how many towers are visible from that side.

A real board, playable here. Clues sit outside the grid; a clue of 1 means the tallest tower is nearest.

Where to start

Start with the extreme clues. On a 4×4 board a clue of 1 forces a 4 in the nearest cell, and a clue of 4 forces the whole line to climb 1, 2, 3, 4 in order. Both give you a full row or a certain cell for free.

A tower is visible when every tower before it is shorter. That means a tall tower early in a line hides everything behind it, which is why a low clue implies a tall neighbour.
